Stevens Cay claimed another vessel over the Easter weekend. The latest victim was a 35-foot Contender with 14 people aboard, which ran aground early Sunday morning, April 24.
The rocky outcropping just off Cruz Bay has proved too tempting to not skirt closely and several vessels have ended up hard aground on the cay this season.
U.S. Coast Guard officials received a call around 1:30 a.m. on April 24 that a boat was aground on Stevens Cay, according to reports. USCG launched a helicopter from its base in Puerto Rico and a vessel from St. Thomas, according to USCG spokesperson Ricardo Castrodad.
Vessels from SeaTow from St. Thomas, St. John Rescue, V.I. Search and Rescue from Tortola and St. Thomas Rescue also responded to the incident, according to officials.
Only two people were injured in the accident, one suffered a wrist injury and the other a blow to the nose, according to a report in the V.I. Daily News.
The two patients were transported by St. John Rescue to Cruz Bay, where they transferred to the Liston “Huntie” Sprauve Ambulance boat for transport to Red Hook and taken to R.L. Schneider Hospital, according to reports.
The Puerto Rican registered vessel was traveling from Jost Van Dyke to Road Town Tortola when it ran aground, according to a report in the V.I. Daily News.
The vessel was taken to Sub Base dry dock for repairs. USCG officials were continuing their investigation into the accident last week.
