William F. Plummer III, 76, died Friday, November 10, 2006, at home with family by his side after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.
Plummer was born in Bath, Maine, on April 17, 1930, a son of William F. and Gertrude (Wakefield) Plummer II. He attended Bath schools and Morse High School. While in school, he delivered firewood and moved furniture with his uncles. At a young age, Plummer could work on and fix anything. From 1952 to 1953, he was employed at Bath Iron Works in the Tin Shop. On June 16, 1953, he married Christine Williams of Georgetown.
From 1955 to 1965, Plummer was a lobster fisherman by himself in the summer and with Pat Moore in the winter. When he wasn’t on the boat he was always busy working on something. He built his home where his wife, Christine, and son Eric live today.
In the early 1960s, Plummer bought the point in Five Islands, where he founded Sheepscot Bay Boat Co., working on and storing boats, selling Boston Whalers and Johnson Outboards for more than 30 years.
Plummer and his wife Christine spent winters traveling the U.S. in motor homes. In 1973, they went to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he built another home and a shop where he could work on outboards. In the 1990s, they wintered on Andros Island in the Bahamas and most recently in central Florida.
Plummer was a member of the Methodist Church in Bath, the Georgetown Fire Department, Lincoln County Weedwackers, the R/C Club and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Plummer of Georgetown; five sons, William F. Plummer IV and his wife Linda of Georgetown, Eric Plummer of Georgetown, Carroll Plummer of Georgetown, Glenn Plummer and his wife Michelle of Georgetown and Robert Plummer and his wife Susan of Bath; one sister, Helen Brown of Brunswick; seven grandchildren, Angela Mead and her husband Jeremy, William V. Plummer, Nicole Plummer, Carroll Plummer II, Abigail Plummer, Mallory Plummer and Allison Plummer; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on November 15, 2006, at the Five Islands Baptist Church where Pastor Barry Moore officiated. A celebration of life followed at the Georgetown Community Center.
