Motionscapes Coming to Maho Bay
Our artistic friends, Bob and Sybil Lefferts, have been vacationing on St. John for 40 years — Bob is a very creative photographer and Sybil loves to sing, especially with the Jazz Islanders on Sundays! She attends jazz camps each summer, and now sings in Portugese and Italian.
Bob will have a one-man show at Maho Bay’s Art Gallery on Wednesday, February 7, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. His photographic images are inspired by the work of impressionist artists — seascape and landscape images that capture the serenity and beauty of nature.
Wednesday night is Italian night at Maho Bay’s restaurant — why not stay on for dinner?
Governor deJongh’s Address Is Full of Hope
Reorganization of departments, overdue payments to vendors, and the appointment of a city planner for St. John were just a few of the improvements in government operations that our newly-elected governor promised in his State of the Territory Address. “Great expectations” is now the catch-phrase of the day.
Congratulations to Our First Lady “Acting” Fire Chief
We’re in safe hands — with an organized and highly respected St. Johnian lady at the helm — Winnie Powell is our new chief (tess?). Happy retirement to Brian Chapman, who ran the show for many years. We have always been blessed with dedicated fire chiefs.
And, guess what — Winnie will be a bachelorette at the art school’s auction on Saturday, February 10 — maybe you’ll win a free ride on the back of a fire truck.
Local Vocalists Produce CDs
Marty Beechler and Jerry Harris, two strong personalities on the entertainment scene, are now offering their individual vocal styling on CDs. Marty’s “Summer Wind” is a tribute to Frank Sinatra — “Just in Time,” “Unforget-table,” “Night and Day” — a joy to listen to.
Jerry’s “Things to Come” ranges from “Lulu’s Back in Town” to “Laura” and “Summertime,” standards that bring out his many talents.
Marty and Jerry often sing with Steve Simon’s Jazz Islanders on Sunday afternoon at the Beach Bar. We were treated to a marvelous duet a few weeks ago — you can tell that they love to sing.
