Westin Employees Volunteer To Assist Program Serving Homeless Population

Regular services for the St. John community’s homeless population got a need boost from Starwood Hotels and Resorts on Thursday, November 13 as staff from the Westin Resort joined community activists to give more than a dozen people access to a resort-style buffet, medical services, and clothing and personal items.

CRUZ BAY — Westin St. John Resorts & Villas associates participated in Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide global volunteer initiative “Starwood Cares for the Community” with a St. John program “Together As One”.

“Together As One is an opportunity for our associates to unite with their colleagues around the world in volunteering for activities that help make a difference in our communities,” said event coordinator Eucil Worrell of the Westin Resort St. John.

“We had to come up with a project for the Westin St. John Resorts & Villas,” Worrell told St. John Tradewinds. “We came up with several ideas, but felt that the opportunity to work with our homeless or less fortunate population of St. John would have a greater impact within our community.”

“My co-chair, Melchia Athanase worked along with me to make this event a success,” Worrell said.

“We were not alone, because we could not have done it without the support of the Cruz Bay Seventh Day Adventist Community Services Department (Anita Smalls) The Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church (Simonia Athanase, Nurse Dora and Ms. Josephine) who were invited to be a part of this event,” Worrell said.

“In addition, several of fellow associates volunteered to assist and I would like to recognize them: Charles Phillip, Myrtle Penn, Kervin Dover, Marvin Lettsome, Dailure Stevens, Barbara Registe, Emily Labate, Lacey Pritchard, Cletus Nicholas, Valida Winn, Susan Frett and those who donated the food and clothing items,” the Westin’s Worrell added.

“We provided medical assistance, food, clothing and conducted a food drive within the hotel by asking our associates to donate food and clothing items to this worthy cause and they came to our assistance,” she said. “Pine Peace Mini Mart stepped up to the plate with several donated items.”

“We were able to present them with bags containing amenities such as shampoo and toothpaste,” Worrell added. “The food and extra clothing items from the drive were turned over to both churches to continue their effort of feeding and providing for the less fortunate.”

“We look forward to doing this again next year,” Worrell said.
