Two Men Arrested on Drug and Extortion Charges

V.I. Police Department officers on St. John arrested two suspects on drug possession and extortion charges in two separate cases that occurred on Tuesday, September 20.

One person was found with eight small plastic bags of marijuana. The other suspect was in possession of a stolen laptop and attempted to extort money from the owner. Both suspects are St. Thomas natives.

Ayala Cornelius, 30, of Estate Enighed, was arrested at 4 p.m. He was stopped by officers in Cruz Bay for a missing front license plate. When Cornelius went to retrieve his documents from the sun visor, the bags of marijuana fell out. Cornelius was arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute. His bail was set at $10,000 by order of the court.

Jose Alomar

Jose Alomar, 39, of Hospital Ground, was arrested shortly after 6 p.m. the same day. VIPD officers had information that Alomar attempted to extort money from the owner of a stolen laptop that was in his possession. He threatened to expose personal information about the owner in exchange for money.

Police set up a sting operation and Alomar was arrested. He was charged with Possession of Stolen Property and Extortion. Bail for Alomar was set at $20,000.

Both suspects were remanded to the Bureau of Corrections on St. Thomas pending further court action.
