Tourists Spot A Seal — Look Out for Sea Lions

Has anyone seen a sea lion?

On Saturday, October 25, tourists stopped by the V.I. National Park Visitors’ Center and reported spotting a seal near Waterlemon Cay that morning.

The aberrant sighting was not an aberration — several sea lions and fur seals escaped from a facility in St. Kitts as Hurricane Omar passed the island in mid-October, according to a CNN report. The animals were reportedly seen off St. Maarten last week.

VINP officials were checking several bays around St. John, but had not spotted the marine mammals yet. Anyone who catches sight of a sea lion or fur seal is urged to snap a photograph if possible and email St. John Tradewinds at editor@tradewinds.vi., or call 340-776-6496.
