September 11th: A Day of Remeberance

American Legion Post 131 welcomed the community to join them in commemorating Patriot Day on Friday, September 11.

Church bells rang in Coral Bay and Cruz Bay at approximately 8:45 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:43 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Each ring commemorated the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 into the north tower of the World Trade Center, United Airlines Flight 175 into the south tower of the World Trade Center, American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 which went down in a field about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

The community was encouraged to take a minute of silence after each ring in remembrance of these terrorist attacks.

A noon-time commemoration ceremony and freedom walk followed the bell ringing in Cruz Bay. The ceremony honored the victims of the attack, emergency-service workers and American military service personnel who have died in the war against terrorism.
