Six New Members Inducted Into National Honor Society at Gifft Hill School
Last week the Gifft Hill School welcomed six new members to their National Honor Society chapter.
This was the Gifft Hill School’s third induction and was performed as a traditional ceremony, with classical music playing as members walked in, a remarkable guest speaker, and a beautiful candle lighting ceremony.
“The ceremony was beautiful, touching,” said Doug Bradley, teacher at GHS and NHS faculty advisor.
Rachel Kitchen, senior and president of the Gifft Hill School’s NHS chapter, started off the ceremony by welcoming and introducing each new member. New members are: sophomores Devin Braun, Sage Buchalter, Jessica Samuel and Malik Stevens; and juniors Lincoln Liburd and Jesse Simonsen. Scott Crawford, co-founder of the Gifft Hill School, delivered a speech giving credit to the numerous talents of GHS’s National Honor Society chapter.
These students make up nearly one-third of the upper school population. The pinning ceremony took place, where certificates and pins were given to each new member. Members were then asked to sign their names in the National Honor Society signature book, signifying the unity of the club and honoring its past and present members. Finally, the lighting ceremony took place.
Candles were lit to signify the four pillars of the National Honor Society, which are character, leadership, scholarship and service. In addition, two other candles were lit in honor of NHS and the Gifft Hill School’s chapter.
“I always enjoy the candle lighting ceremony,” said Bradley.
It was a serene scene with each ideal being described while new members lighted the candles. The school was excited to add a new group of sensational students to its chapter. The inductees were equally pleased, especially during their first group photo.
“I’m really honored to be a part of such a good group of people who set such high goals for themselves,” said Kitchen. “This is a particularly intelligent and dedicated group of students and I feel so lucky to be able to be associated with them.”
This year’s group is the largest group of NHS members the school has had yet.
“I’m really excited,” said Bradley. “All are active around the school. It’s going to be a fun year next year.”
This group has set high goals for next year with a possibility of putting on a charity fair to benefit a charity of their choosing.
But who knows what new, fresh ideas these new NHS members will bring to the table. We can certainly expect great things from this group, making our community an even better place to live.
