Natural Wonder: Whale Shark

This whale shark was spotted in Great Lameshur Bay, near Tektite, on the south side of St. John.

Although this particular shark was only about 15 feet long, they are the largest known species of fish in the ocean and can grow to over 50 feet in length and weigh up 20 tons.
Despite their enormous size, whale sharks feed almost exclusively on small planktonic organisms. Their range covers the entire tropical belt, from the Caribbean to the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
