Island Stylin’ Pampers at Affordable Prices

Island Stylin’ owner Jennifer Tyler, at right, makes a client look and feel beautiful during a recent appointment at her salon located across from St. John Ice in the Lumberyard Complex.

Looking to get pampered without breaking the bank?

Head right over to Island Stylin’ across from St. John Ice in the Lumberyard complex where Jennifer Tyler works her magic on one’s hair without leaving their wallet empty.

The Alabama-native stylist, master colorist and color correction specialist opened her shop in July after doing hair on Love City and back home for a decade. Tyler moved down to St. John after obtaining her beautician license five years ago and quickly drew a loyal following of clients who lined up for her “bikini” cuts on Cruz Bay beach, where she worked renting dinghies.

“I got too busy,” said Tyler. “I guess word got around and I got really busy. I had to open a salon, but they miss their bikini hair cuts.”

Now that she has her own salon, the hospitable hair stylist gives each client her undivided attention, and this Southern girl will not rush anyone out the door.

“I never turn and burn anyone,” said Tyler. “I don’t rush anyone. It’s just me, so I give each client my complete attention.”

While it sounds great, service like that often comes with a hefty price tag. Not so at Island Stylin’ where cuts start at $25 and one will only shell out $32 for a shampoo, haircut and style.

“I will not raise my prices,” Tyler said. “It will never be $45 or more for a hair cut here. I want people to come in and get pampered, but get a good deal.”

Tyler’s clients get more than a good deal, they get a great cut, amazing color and honesty, albeit served up with that Southern charm.

“I am very honest with people,” she said. “Sometimes I can be brutally honest.”

But that honesty is welcome when one strolls out of Island Stylin’ feeling like a whole new person, even if one walked in with a less-than-stellar dye job to begin with.

“I do not give up,” said Tyler. “I am a master colorist and color correction specialist — color is my passion. I want to make everyone completely happy.”

Color treatments range from $55 to $95 for base and highlights. Tyler also offers waxing, blowouts, straightening and deep conditioning treatments. Once assistant Julie Dedes earns her nail technicians license this summer, Island Stylin’ will also offer manicures and pedicures.

Dedes is currently helping Tyler keep her very busy book in order — try to call a week in advance to book an appointment. But walk-ins are welcome. Tyler is extremely flexible and will make every effort to accommodate one’s schedule.

“I’ll do whatever really,” she said. “I will come in early or stay late for a client. I want to meet their needs.”

Beyond her extensive skill set, Tyler’s complete dedication appears effortless, which might be due to that huge smile on her face. The stylist obviously truly enjoys what she does.

“This is my calling; it’s my passion,” she said. “This has been my dream — just being here and knowing that I accomplished something like this. I wake up and I love what I do.”

“I love to cut hair and I love to make people happy,” said Tyler. “I love to make people feel like a different person when they walk out.”

Anyone who hasn’t stopped in yet should keep an ear out for Tyler’s planned grand opening. A firm date has not yet been set, but she promised to host a soiree soon where clients will enjoy cocktails, appetizers and free gift cards.
