Erica and Robin Miner will welcome diners to The Terrace Restaurant to enjoy fine dining and amazing Cruz Bay harbor views.
After a short stint as a Mexican eatery, and an even shorter time as a steak house, the former Stone Terrace location across from the Cruz Bay waterfront will open later this month as The Terrace Restaurant.
With Chef Erica Miner, formerly of La Tapa and Waterfront Bistro, helming the kitchen, The Terrace is the most anticipated new restaurant opening of the season on St. John.
Known for her clean palette, Miner promises French-inspired fine dining at her establishment. Think classic French techniques, fresh ingredients, locally sourced whenever possible, highlighted with light herbs and complimented by a well-curated wine list and classic cocktails.
Although Miner grew up around food — her mother was a chef who ran her own catering business — it wasn’t until she was in college that she discovered her passion for cooking. Miner got her first job in a kitchen while working toward a degree in Political Science at the University of Wisconsin.
After finishing at UW, she studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago and returned to Madison in time to help open a new eatery.
“It was a restaurant I used to work in and they were reopening in a new location,” said Miner. “That was the first restaurant I helped open and I really enjoyed it. This will actually be the third restaurant I open, and I hope I like owning a restaurant as much as I like opening one.”
Miner and her husband Robin, a veteran hospitality worker as proficient behind the bar as he is in the kitchen, moved to St. John eight years ago from Wisconsin. She cut her Love City culinary chops at La Tapa, where she secured a job before even stepping foot on the island.

A brightly colored mural was recently painted on a concrete wall outside of the entrance to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Cruz Bay. The vivid images are hard for any passing pedestrians or motorists to miss and certainly brighten up the area.

The former Subway location in Cruz Bay, above, was transformed into the tropical bar and casual eatery Iguana Grill.

Ric Ortiz outside his new Cruz Bay hot spot.
Texas natives Ric Ortiz and Nile Wright packed up a few recipes from the Lone Star State to serve at their new Cruz Bay hotspot – Iguana Grill.
“We are trying to bring a little bit of Texas to the island so every one can get a little taste of what we have back home,” Ortiz said.
The two owners took on a complete remodel of the centrally located space that formerly housed the governor’s campaign headquarters and Subway to create a family-friendly establishment in the heart of Cruz Bay that serves up specialty burgers, happy hour specials and a slew of fried delights.
“We wanted it to be a family restaurant with a great feel and a nice view of Cruz Bay,” Ortiz said. “It’s got the same happy hour vibe as Woody’s — it’s just higher up and fenced in so there is no need to worry about kids running in the street.”
Four garage doors create Iguana Grill’s open-air feel, transforming the restaurant into one giant deck when reeled up and providing a bird’s eye-view of the downtown happenings.

Crime Stoppers is asking the public’s help to solve the following crimes. If you know something, say something. Even the smallest bit of information may be just what law enforcement needs to identify and arrest these criminals.
On July 10, a 12-foot Caribe inflatable boat was observed to be securely docked with its black 15 horsepower Mercury outboard motor mounted on it in the area of the customs dock in Cruz Bay. On July 14, at approximately 3 p.m., the owner discovered that the vessel was on dry dock and the engine, fuel tank, a one kilogram chrome Bruce anchor, and a foot pump were missing.
On Monday August 8, at around 2:15 a.m., police were dispatched to a burglary in progress at Isla Vista Villa in Estate Pastory, which was occupied by a couple. The husband had been investigating a noise on the lower level, and encountered an intruder who was entering the villa through the northwestern door. While his wife called 911, the husband struggled with the intruder who hit him on the head with a black handgun and then fled. The intruder was described as a black male, 5’ 5” tall, 130 pounds, wearing dark clothing and a dark bandana or doo-rag.

Guy Benjamin School students help in the effort by removing debris and trash from Brown Bay Beach. More than 1,300 pounds of trash were collected from nine miles of St. John’s coastline during this year’s Virgin Islands Coastweeks, which ran from September 16 through October 7.
This is the 15th year that volunteers helped clear the coastline for V.I. Coastweeks, the Virgin Islands’ effort to participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.
