As divers continue capturing lionfish in local waters (see related story on this page), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials are taking a unique approach to combat the potentially devastating spread of the species.
A new study looking at how to curb the rapid growth of lionfish, suggests that approximately 27 percent of mature lionfish will have to be removed monthly for one year to reduce its population growth rate to zero, according to information from NOAA.
But there is good news. The invasive fish happens to be delicious — and NOAA is encouraging chefs to find new ways to introduce it to U.S. consumers.
Lionfish are native to the western and central Pacific Ocean, but have established themselves from North Carolina to South America.
They are a popular aquarium fish that were likely first released in Florida waters in the mid-1980s.
Since then, the species has spread rapidly. Scientists and public officials are seriously concerned at the effect lionfish are having on reef ecosystems, since this predator is capable of rapid population growth and outcompeting native fish for food and territory.

Island Roads has completed excavation and demolition of the VINP Visitors center parking lot to prepare the area for paving soon.
Newly paved parking lots at Peace Hill and Jumbie Beach are just the latest completed work of the on-going $4.85 million North Shore Road rehabilitation project, which is in full swing again this month.
With funding from Federal Highway Administration’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants and the V.I. National Park fee program at Trunk Bay, VINP officials are overseeing a complete overhaul of the roadway and parking facilities along the island’s North Shore Road.
The project was awarded to contractor Island Roads in September 2009 and was scheduled to wrap up in September 2010. While the project is proceeding on schedule, officials have obtained additional funds to extend the scope and time frame of the work, explained VINP Superintendent Mark Hardgrove.
“We’ve extended the project one month to October 2010, because we’ve added about $800,000 of work,” said Hardgrove.
With an additional $490,000 from Federal Highway Administration and $325,000 from the NPS fee program, officials have been able to extend the paving project from the originally planned final destination, Hardgrove added.

The Peace Hill parking area, above, was recently paved with funding from the VINP fee program at Trunk Bay.

(L to R) Jernings Abraham, Afrika Anthony, Monae Clark, Deneisha Davis, Tristan Ewald, salutatorian Isaac Lalich, Shaiman Lalich, Jane Miller, Autumn Orlandini and valedictorian Michael Vargo.
The Gifft Hill School’s Commencement Exercise on Thursday night, June 17, was in many ways a christening of the school’s newly finished Trayser Field.
The graduating seniors, the island’s only 12th grade promotion, kicked off at 5:30 p.m. at Trayser Field under bright skies. The GHS class of 2010 consisted of 10 graduates — Jernings Abraham, Afrika Anthony, Monae Clark, Deneisha Davis, Tristan Ewald, Isaac Lalich, Shaiman Lalich, Jane Miller, Autumn Orlandini and Michael Vargo.
Vargo, a member of GHS’ National Honor Society chapter was this year’s Valedictorian. Not only did Vargo succeed with his stringent course load but he also posted the highest SAT scores in Gifft Hill School’s history.
