Animal Care Center Is in Dire Need Of Funding To Keep Shelter Open PDF Print E-mail

Several dogs and cats are available for adoption.

Despite countless hours of work and tireless fundraising efforts, the Animal Care Center of St. John is in dire financial straits and needs emergency help from the community in order to keep the doors to its no-kill animal shelter open.

In addition to staffing and running the no-kill shelter, the organization spays and neuters homeless animals and supplies food to the many unowned cats living in the bush through feeding stations placed across the island.

The seeds for the current association were originally sown in the late 1980s and while the ACC has suffered its share of reorganizations and changing staff and board members, the group has remained a steadfast advocate for animal rights and humane animal care.

The ACC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with every dime donated going directly to cover shelter expenses. The ACC Board of Directors is all volunteer.

The group’s no-kill shelter is currently at capacity with officials caring for 13 dogs, five puppies, 14 cats and 27 kittens.

While the ACC receives a small government grant and hosts three major fundraisers a year, those fundraisers have been trending down and with operating expenses topping $13,000 a month, the organization is plainly broke, according to board member Jennifer Dale.

Stop by Asolare for exciting libations from Kim Holland, at far left, tasty treats from their new bar menu, above, and impressive eats at the tables, center.

In the wake of restaurant company Integrated Assets’ financial struggles last year, one of the company’s restaurants has emerged with invigorated menu options, inspired chefs and enticing libations.

Perched above Cruz Bay, Asolare has long been a mainstay of Love City’s fine dining scene. With its commanding view, the scenery has always been a main attraction of the restaurant. But now Asolare’s vantage point is just one of the draws at Winston Bennett’s showpiece restaurant.

Bennett, who formerly owned Integrated Assets, used to oversee Chole and Bernards, Chateaux Bordeaux, Paradiso and Asolare.
With Chole and Bernards and Chateaux Bordeaux closed and Paradiso under new ownership, Bennett has given Asolare the attention it deserves and it shows — in all facets of the high-end establishment.

Upon first entering the historic-feeling stone structure at Lind Point, diners are whisked to the bar where they are in for a treat. Mixologist Kim Holland has crafted one of the most impressive drink menus on St. John.

The Cinnamon Bay Gut waterfall

With heavy rains lashing St. John all week, the Cinnamon Bay waterfall was forcefully flowing on Wednesday, July 20. While a tropical wave moved over the island on Tuesday, a large area of disturbed weather meant more of the same weather. Skies aren’t expected to clear for several days and the next wave could pass through the territory over the weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Construction barricades line the shoulder of South Shore Road at Guinea Gut.

Contractor V.I. Paving continues to make steady progress on the complete overhaul of Gifft Hill and South Shore Roads, and work is expected to be completed by the contract’s closing date, October 10.

Workers are currently finishing up installing box culverts on South Shore Road near the Westin Resort, and will soon be installing pipe culverts on the first switchback east of Chocolate Hole.

The new culverts are an important part of the project, which aims to both fix the potholes which plague Route 104, and prevent future potholes from cropping up. Culverts, swales and drains will direct running water away from the road’s surface, preserving the roadway and drastically reducing the amount of damage often seen on Gifft Hill and South Shore roads during heavy rains.
