Hurricane Danny strengthened a little more this afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center.
At 5 p.m. today, maximum sustained winds are at 80 miles per hour – a Category 1 hurricane. Some additional strengthening during the next 24 hours is forecast, but a weakening trend is expected to begin after that.
Danny is centered over the central tropical Atlantic Ocean about 1030 miles east of the Windward Islands, moving toward the west-northwest near 10 miles per hour. This general motion is expected to continue into Saturday.
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
Both NOAA and Air Force Reserve Unit reconnaissance aircraft will be investigating Danny Friday afternoon, and that data will provide a better estimate of the hurricane’s structure and strength.
VITEMA Director Mona Barnes continues to encourage the public to also monitor this system very closely and to be prepared to act in the event the weather system impacts the Territory.
The National Hurricane Center will issue its next complete advisory at 11 p.m. tonight.
