Coral Bay Community Council to Hold 2nd Youth Event Oct. 21 & Nov.1

The Coral Bay Community Council (CBCC) would like to invite all youths ages 12-18 to be a part of its second youth event entitled “Youth in Action on St. John Part 2.” These activities will take place on October 21, 2016 and November 1, 2016 (public school holidays) at the Guy H. Benjamin Community Center in Coral Bay. Participation is free, you only need to apply.

Too Much Trash: What Do We Do? will be the event’s theme. Participants will learn about solid waste management, which includes waste reduction and recycling. There will also be two hands-on opportunities via two field trips – one to the Island Green Living Association’s (IGLA) Resource Depot and the other to cleanup a ghut in the Coral Bay area. These activities will help students to fulfill required community service hours that they need to graduate from high school.

Lunch and snacks will be provided each day, and transportation will also be provided for this event. Students must be ready for pickup by 9 am at designated location in Cruz Bay and around Coral Bay. Application forms are available at the CBCC office, Connections East, and Keep Me Posted. Participation in this event is free. Written parental permission is necessary. Deadline: October 19th.

The first “Youth in Action on St. John” event took place from December 28-30, 2015 at the Calabash Boom Residents Center. Last year’s event was a mixture of fun activities, interactive demonstrations, and dynamic speakers. It was an educational experience for the youth, covering such topics as an introduction to environmental justice, what it means to be a part of a neighborhood and community, an introduction to nonprofit organizations, consequences of illegal dumping and ghut littering, and more. The youth participated in the cleanup of the Hard Labor Ghut, as well as beginning the process of creating a Public Service Announcement (PSA) video, which will be completed during the second event. This video is being made so that the youth can get the message out to the whole Virgin Islands on stopping illegal dumping and ghut littering.

These events were funded under a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Justice Grant intended to expand participation by all people as advocates for clean water and clean air and a healthy environment for all.

To summarize, the Coral Bay Community Council (CBCC) would like to invite all youths ages 12-18 to participate in our FREE youth event: “Youth in Action on St. John Part 2.” These activities will take place on Friday, October 21, 2016 and Tuesday, November 1, 2016 (public school holidays) at the Guy H. Benjamin Community Center in Coral Bay. Start time for both days will be at 10am. The first day’s activities will end at 3:30pm, while the second day’s activities will end at 4pm.
