Caneel Bay Resort Is in Hotze’s Hands While Rosewood Seeks New Director

Nikolay Hotze

The Caneel Bay Resort is in good hands following the departure of former managing director Rik Blyth, who recently began his new job as president of the U.S. Virgin Islands Hotel and Tourism Association.

Nikolay Hotze, who only began his job as Caneel’s resort manager in January, has stepped up to take care of managing director duties while Rosewood  Resorts interviews candidates for the managing director position, which is expected to be filled by September.

“As resort manager, I am in charge of day to day operations, and I am filling in for the managing director as well,” said Hotze.

Originally from Germany, Hotze came to Caneel with many years of experience in the hospitality field.

Hotze was schooled in hospitality in his native Germany and gained a bit of practical experience there before moving to London, where he worked at the Savoy hotel.

“I thought the big world was out there in America,” said Hotze. “I applied, and ended up in Puerto Rico, where I worked at el San Juan Hotel for five years. I started as an assistant restaurant manager and ended up as assistant director of food and beverage.”

Hotze then moved to Miami, where he lived for seven years. He worked as the assistant director of food and beverage at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa; and as the food and beverage director at the Tides Hotel and Loews Miami Beach Hotel.

From Rosewood in Miami
Hotze joined the family of Rosewood Resorts when in 2006 he helped to open Acqualina in Miami as the opening manager.

“I transferred within Rosewood to Caneel,” said Hotze. “It’s great; the resort is fantastic.”

The Caneel resort manager, father of a four-month-old dau-ghter and a four-year-old boy, lives on the resort property.

“My four-year-old enjoys it more than I can,” said Hotze. “He goes to the beach, has swimming lessons, sees the donkeys. He’s a happy camper.”
