This year’s issue is all about unity—coming together artistically to present a complete and balanced lineup of meaningful stories that mark a place in time on the island.

Local artist Denise Wright captures a moment at the 2012 Addy Awards on St. Thomas (publisher’s photo) when MaLinda Media took home several Gold and Silver Addys—winning top prize for “Publication Design” and “Editorial Spread” for the U.S. Virgin Islands and a Silver Addy at the District level, which includes competitors from Florida and Puerto Rico. During a short speech that evening, I told the audience that I accepted the awards on behalf of the very talented crew of contributors to St. John Magazine—a well-rounded, ambitious, creative, and never ordinary group of professional writers and photographers.

The award-winning night was a team accomplishment and island victory—an amalgamation of people and their talents working together to promote one of the Caribbean’s top destinations.

Expectations at MaLinda Media are high—and continue to rise each year. There is always room for improvement and we take each issue and dissect what we’ve produced—keeping what worked and changing what didn’t. Every year, readers are impressed by the superior work of our contributors as St. John Magazine keeps getting better and better.

This year’s feature articles are stories that will inspire, educate, intrigue and ground readers—providing an understanding of the island’s rich history, local people, fascinating tales, island life, our ever-caring community, and featuring its most famous and breathtaking landscapes and seascapes.

St. John native Tristan Ewald’s photograph of the America Hill Great House graces the cover, while veteran writer Amy Roberts enlightens readers with the rich yet troubling history of the island’s plantation era. Readers can fly among the clouds with photographer Steve Simonsen as he captures magnifcent panoramic shorelines, and get familiar with a few St. John crabs as native Rafe Boulon shares his knowledge of these intriguing island creatures.

No matter what your interests are, there is a story for everyone. So…go on, start reading. You’re bound to fall in love—or fall in love again—with this remarkable and surprising place many of us call home.
